Black Diamond Big Mountain Comp at Temple Basin

7th September 2010

Black Diamond Big Mountain Competition in association with CHILL

The annual Black Diamond Big Mountain competition saw a strong, albeit smaller than expected (with recent earthquakes in Canterbury) line up of big mountain athletes go big at Temple Basin on Saturday. Those that hiked up the snow laden Temple Basin track were rewarded with a clear day and 40cms of fresh dry snow.

The event was initially intended to take place over two days but the grim forecast combined with earth movements saw organisers reformat the event to a one day, two run event. The athletes made the most of the perfect day and great conditions going big at every opportunity in order to impress the judges and claim their share of the prize pool. Austrias Fabian Lentsch wowed onlookers and judges alike with his unique lines and huge airs to take out the skiers open mens division with New Zealands Sam Smoothy a close second.

The mens snowboard title was anybodys game and after the first run. The final run saw New Zealands Daniel Bond taking victory narrowly edging out Scott Heale fresh from his victory in the K2 Big Mountain CHILL Series.
