Upcoming events to watch out for.....

6th January 2010

2010 is upon us and the Northern Hemisphere winter is in full swing. Each year January brings the start of the competition season with Dew Tour, X-Games and both Freeride Tours kicking off.

The Dew Tour actually started last month in Breckenridge where Jossi Wells kick started his comp season with a Silver in Superpipe. But the freestyle stage only gets bigger from here, another Dew Tour at Snowbasin then the biggest event of the year the Winter X-Games from Aspen and then the final Dew Tour from Mt. Snow.

We will be keeping you up to date with all the results and footage of these comps as kiwis Jossi Wells, Byron Wells, and Lyndon Sheehan battle for podium spots against the World's best.

The Freeride competition side of skiing also moves into full flow this month with both the North American tours and The World Tour getting under way. Most of the kiwi contingent are based in Europe which will see them battling through the world tour qualifying series aiming to gain a place in the main FWT events.

With the NZ Open, Chill series and Xtreme comp all being FWT registered this year all the kiwi crew have already gained valuable qualifying points. Janina Kuzma is pre-qualified for the first 2 stops on the FWT. Sam Smoothy has a great start from his NZ results and is already ranked 10th overall.

As well as Janina and Sam, Neil Williman, Fraser McDougall, Pete Oswald, Marc Walker and Tom Brownlee will be based in Europe flying the flag for New Zealand on the FWT qualifying tour.

Janina is actually competing tomorrow in the North American Freeride Tour as she is currently still in Canada. Revelstoke, British Columbia is hosting the Canadian Freeskiing Champs as part of the North American Tour an event that Janina won last year. We will keep you posted on Janina's progress...

NZSkier.com will be following the kiwis in all the events and competitions throughout the Northern Hemisphere and will have all the best news and coverage possible as soon as it happens. So keep watching this space for your summer ski fix and to support our athletes overseas.....

Maunganui

Mt Taranaki is exactly what kids think when you say “volcano” – it looks like the homecoming king from a geography textbook. Maunganui itself is something of a split personality; cruisy blue runs off the lower T-bar, slackcountry and advanced runs off the higher rope tow.

Roundhill

A few years ago Roundhill was a super-friendly ski resort where the cafe made a mean cheese toastie and families from Timaru spent the holidays, however, Roundhill has transformed into a new mountain.
