Powder chasing at Mt.Hutt
If adventure is what you have in mind then getting out at bed at 3am in
Queenstown and driving to Mt. Hutt is sure to deliver. NZ Skier
photographers Jeremy Perice and Miles Holden did not want to be the ones to miss out. It was not hard to pull together some quality talent even
at 10pm on Sunday evening, especially when the weather map said Monday
and Tuesday blue with 50cm of fresh snow.
Sam Smoothy, Charlie Anderson and Takeshi Nakahara were keen for a
couple of days shooting photos and looking forward to the first big dump
of 08 for the southern fields.
Arriving in the car park at 8.30 we were all pretty stoked to see the
towers being bombed by patrol. There was a hold up on the six seater
until 12.30, The wind riming on the chairlift was about six inchs
thick this was going to take considerable time to clear, The quad was
still open at 9 and we managed to shoot some images in the lower towers
with some fluffy cold snow.
Meeting up with Cam McDermid and Tom Brownlee two kids from Christchurch
provided plenty of action with Tom getting caught up on a rock take off
and throwing a last minute front flip the first time Miles and Jeremy
put the camera on him. Cam was skiing strong and it was good for these
boys to see veterans of ski modeling like Takeshi and Sam Smoothy
work the terrain for the camera.
We had some great turns and once the six was open the whole mountain was
in tip top shape and people were shredding the whole of the towers back
to the lift. At the end of a very fun day we got into Methven found
accommodation and had a lovely thai meal at the Charming Restarant....
Day 2 More great skiing with wholesalers putting a ski demo day on
there was great cold winter conditions and far less people to content
with like on manic monday....!
So after a full morning the boys piled back in the truck and headed
south with some photos in the bag and a sense of achievement and after 3
coffee stops and a foot long sub in geraldene we made it back to
queenstown at 730....
The round trip diesel bill on my 2.8l turbo mitsi was $260 and just one
year earlier the same round trip was approx $120.... OMG!!!
